2004 Klein Competition WInner, Jung-Min Amy Lee
Twentyone year old violinist Jung-min Amy Lee was born in Seoul, Korea. She began her violin studies at the age of ten and made her solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of fifteen. Since then, Ms. Lee has appeared with the Temple University Symphony Orchestra, the Kennett Symphony Orchestra, the Lower Merion Symphony, again with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2000, and, most recently, with the Curtis Chamber Orchestra on their tour in Japan last spring playing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Ms. Lee has won the Philadelphia Orchestra Greenfield Competition, Philadelphia Orchestra’s Mann Music Guild Competition, Temple University Concerto Competition, and Kennett Symphony Orchestra Competition. Ms. Lee is presently a student at the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studies with Ida Kavafian. In addition to the violin, she also plays the viola.

2003 Klein Competition Winner, Eric Nowlin
Twenty-two-year-old Eric Nowlin , began playing the violin at age seven, and by age eleven began his formal training on viola. He began his early studies in Madison, Wisconsin with Eugene Purdue and Katrin Talbot, continuing in high school at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Having completed his Bachelor’s degree at the Juilliard School, he is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree studying with Samuel Rhodes, violist of the Juilliard String Quartet.

2002 Klein Competition Winner, Min-Ji Kim
A Cellist from Seoul, South Korea who studies with Laurence Lesser at the New England Conservatory in Boston. She attended the Korean National University of the Arts at age seventeen. Ms. Kim has won several competitions in Korea, including first prize in the Dong-Ah, Choong-Ang Music Competition and the Grand Prix in the Seoul Youth Music Competition.

2001 Klein Competition Winner, Howard Zhang
Sixteen-year-old violinist Howard Zhang was born in Shanghai, China, and has studied violin with his father since the age of three. He presently studies with Dorothy DeLay and Itzhak Perlman at the Juilliard School. His principal teachers include Hyo Kang and Abram Shtern. He made his debut at the age of nine when he performed the Bruch Concerto in G minor with the Redlands Symphony (California).
Howard’s overall performance at the Competition was nothing less than spectacular, said Director Mitch Klein. He possesses both the fire and flair that captivated our audience and technique and expressivity that won over our judges. As with so many of our winners, he will be an artist to watch in the years to come.
As guest artist, Mr. Zhang has performed most of the major violin concerti with the following symphony orchestras: Vancouver, San Diego, Louisiana, Charleston, Long Beach, Dallas, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Monterey, Puerto Rico, Winnipeg, and Shanghai.He has performed in recitals for the Stradivarius Society and at the Music Festivals of Spoleto, Aspen, and the Perlmans’ music program. He has been featured in television news articles on PBS and other stations. Mr. Zhang has won the Young Musican/David Rose Memorial Scholarship for the last seven years. In 1993 he won the first prize in the American String Teachers Association Competition. In 1994, he was honored with the loan of a three-quarter sized violin made by Gagliano in 1760, courtesy of the Stradivarius Society and violinist Midori. Mr. Zhang’s CD featuring Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnol will come out this year. Congratulations!

Angela Fuller, violin: 2000 1st Prize
Angela Fuller, last year’s IMK winner, began violin studies at the age of three with her mother, Janai Fuller. At nine she made her solo debut with orchestra. Ms. Fuller, 23, has soloed with orchestras across the country, including the East Texas Symphony, the Cleveland Institute of Music Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Ms. Fuller has appeared at the Aspen Music Festival, San Diego’s Mainly Mozart Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Center. She has been concertmaster of the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra under David Effron, and the Aspen Symphonia Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa.
Angela currently serves as Assistant Concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra. She studied at the University of Minnesota with Sally O’Reilly and then at the Cleveland Institute with William Preucil. She has been concertmaster of the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra under David Effron and the Aspen Symphonia Orchestra under Sieji Ozawa. |

Denise Djokic, cello: 1998 1st Prize
- First Prize at the 2000 Caprio Young Artists Competition in New Jersey.
- Winner of Canada Council for the Arts National Competition 2000.
Our 1998 IMK winner, 19 year-old cellist Denise Djokic was recently honored by the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank. The Instrument Bank acquires through donations and loans quality instruments to be used by established or gifted young Canadian musicians to help further their international careers. The 1696 Bonjour Stradivari cello has been awarded to Denise for a two-year loan. The Bonjour Stradivari cello, made by Antonio Stradivari ca. 1696, is named after an amateur 19th century Parisian cellist, Abel Bonjour, who owned it until his death sometime after 1885. More recently, it was owned by Martin Lovett of the celebrated Amadeus Quartet. The cello is valued at an estimated $4 million. Denise previously won the two-year loan of a Gagliano cello in an Instrument Bank competition in July 1999. Congratulations! |

Described as something of a phenomenon by the Strad magazine, Canadian born violinist Lara St. John, who was a prize winner in the 1993 IMK, has gone on to a magnificent career. She has performed as soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, and the Montreal Symphony. With the 2000-2001 season come her debuts with the New Jersey Symhony (under Hugh Wolff), the Tokyo Symphony, the Hong Kong Symphony, the Honolulou Symphony, and the Calgary Symphony.
She has won several competitions in addition to the IMK, including the Gelber Prize in Canada, the Minnesota Orchestra Competition, the Philadelphia Orchestra Competition, and the Grand Prize of the Canadian Music Competition. In September of 1997, she won the use of the 1702 Lyall Stradivarius for two years from the Canada Council for the Arts and an anonymous donor.
Her debut CD Bach Works for Solo Violin has sold over 30,000 copies and received resounding acclaim. The Strad magazine selected her as one of ?the stars of the next decade?. Her home is now New York City and she currently performs on the 1779 '"Salabue" Guadagnini. |

Since winning the IMK in 1992, cellist Mark Kosower has continued to tour and perform nationwide. This past year, Mark performed with Neal Gittleson and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra in April and Emmanuel Villaume and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in August, and was a featured performer at the Peninsula Music Festival in Door County, Wisconsin. He will be performing with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra in February 2001, with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra later that month, and with the Wichita Symphony in March 2001. |
